Miami officer airlifted, 2 transported after crash on I-95 near Golden Glades Interchange

A Miami Police officer has been airlifted to the hospital after he was severely injured during a crash in North Miami-Dade.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Golden Glades Interchange just before 7 a.m., Friday.

7SkyForce HD flew over the scene where a police cruiser with heavy front-end damage could be seen in a ditch off the side of the highway. Other officers were seen pulling the victim from his vehicle.

The City of Miami Police officer was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center after sustaining a severe injury to his leg, though it was not considered life-threatening.

FHP said the driver of a dark gray Toyota sedan abruptly changed lanes and crossed into the path of the officer’s cruiser, causing the collision.

The Toyota with heavy back-end damage and deployed airbags could be seen stopped on the left lanes.

The driver behind the wheel of the gray vehicle was not injured, but two other passengers were transported to Aventura Hospital with minor injuries.

All northbound lanes on Interstate 95 were shut down as air rescue responded to the scene. The northbound lanes to Florida’s Turnpike and the Palmetto Expressway remained blocked off for hours but have since reopened.

7News cameras captured multiple uniformed officers arriving at the hospital to show support for their fellow officer.

FHP continues to investigate the crash, but they said the driver of the Toyota is responsible and will be cited.
